Salt acts as a nutrient and ensures the body's thermoregulation. It is also a seasoning that stimulates the animals' appetite: through its effect on salivation, rumination and digestion. It regulates the intake of water and dry matter (DM) and thus supports fattening and milk yield.
A salt deficiency leads to various (more or less visible) symptoms: reduced appetite, pica (licking and feeding addiction), lower growth and reduced milk production. The animal appears tired, is more susceptible to diseases, fertility problems can occur and demineralisation can occur.
It is therefore necessary to supply the animals with salt regularly. The requirement is at least 1.5 to 2 g sodium per kg dry matter (corresponds to approx. 4 g salt per kg dry matter).
Salt is the only feedstuff (apart from water) for which animals have a specific appetite, meaning that they can adjust their intake to their needs. There is no oversupply or undersupply and no losses, as the salt is offered in a compact form. As the salt requirement is permanent, the SEL'PUR salt licks must be available in sufficient quantities for free intake all year round - both in the stable and on the pasture.
